{"id":1033,"date":"2023-02-11T15:18:01","date_gmt":"2023-02-11T21:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brandongeneralmuseum.ca\/?p=1033"},"modified":"2023-02-14T15:15:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T21:15:25","slug":"the-chinese-experience-in-brandon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/brandongeneralmuseum.ca\/index.php\/2023\/02\/11\/the-chinese-experience-in-brandon\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chinese Experience in Brandon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xdj266r\">The Brandon General Museum and Archives is thrilled about our second <strong>Show &amp; Tell<\/strong> series on Sunday February 26 at 2pm!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s\"><strong>Sue-On &amp; Bill Hillman<\/strong> and <strong>Kenny Choy<\/strong> will share a presentation about the Chinese experience in Brandon, Manitoba followed by a Q&amp;A.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s\">This speaker series will take place on the last Saturday of every month (except this month it&#8217;s a Sunday) and is by donation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s\">\n<p>Space is limited \u2013 to register, please email us at bgmainfo@wcgwave.ca or call 204 717 1514<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>About our Speakers:<\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\"><strong>Kenny Choy<\/strong> and <strong>Sue-On Hillman<\/strong> (Choy) were born in Toisan, China, and grew up in the rural Manitoba town Newdale and are Descendants of Chinese immigrants from pre-1900.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">Sue-On immigrated in 1958 with her mother after the government of Canada repealed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1947. Kenny immigrated in 1959.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">Kenny trained in Laboratory Technology, becoming Chief Medical Technologist at BMHC and as Assistant Administrator at WestMan Lab before retiring 1983. In addition to his medical career, he and his wife Rebecca were restaurateurs, and today, are still successful real estate developers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">Sue-On married <strong>Bill Hillman<\/strong>, received B.A and B.Ed degrees from Brandon University. She taught high school English and Geography, and later as an English language teacher at B.U with International students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">Bill and Sue-On took over Soo\u2019s, the family restaurant, in 1992, and retiring in 2002.
